The orchestra: Artist or Artisan in the 21st century?
Artist or artisan in the 21st century?
The debate will look at the ways in which orchestras in the United Kingdom and Scandinavia operate and what lessons might be learned from the different approaches.
Representatives from the Philharmonia Orchestra will join Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor Esa-Pekka Salonen to discuss their work and consider the role of the musicians within the organisation; how to foster their professional and creative commitment to the orchestra; how best to go about developing audience and outreach strategies and the impact of concert halls as the physical setting for the orchestras’ performance.
David Whelton, London Philharmonia Managing Director and Richard Slaney, Head of Digital, will be on hand to introduce the Philharmonia Orchestra. They will be joined by Tuomas Kinberg from the Lahti Symphony Orchestra, Gustav Djupsjöbacka, Rector of the Sibelius Academy, and Risto Nieminen. The event will be chaired by Cathy Graham, Director of Music at the British Council.
The event is part of the Philharmonia Orchestra’s visit to Helsinki, which is generously supported by the British Council.
3pm, 22 August, Chamber Music Hall, Sibelius Academy
Admission free. Please note that the debate will be held in English.
