IRCAM workshops

What does it take to build a musical instrument? How is sound created? How can sound be expressed digitally? These are some of the questions that will be addressed in a series of workshops run by the IRCAM Institute during Helsinki Festival. They are an opportunity for the young participants to experiment with both computers and traditional instruments to create new instruments and sounds and bring them together into virtual orchestras.

IRCAM, the Paris-based new music research centre is joining its founder, Pierre Boulez and his Ensemble Intercontemporain chamber orchestra on a visit to Helsinki this August. Appearing as part of the Helsinki Festival, IRCAM will be joining the orchestra in concert at the city’s Finlandia Hall on 14 August and offering a series of electro-acoustic music workshops to local youngsters.

The workshops are designed for children aged 12 and over. All workshops will be given in English and will be attended by a Finnish-speaking facilitator. Maximum group size 12. The workshops are free and require no previous musical experience.
